In this post, I’m going to answer the question, “Should I build my own website?

The simple answer may be that you should use your time, energy and expertise building your business, not your business website. The question “Should I build my own website or hire an agency” is being asked more frequently. With more and more companies advertising how simple it is to “do it yourself” we’ve been trained to think it’s cheap and easy.  Do you really want to build and maintain a web platform for your business? There are many things to consider when building a web-based platform for your business. Here are the top reasons that I talk about when speaking to potential Charles Hutchinson Agency clients:

I was recently contacted by a small business owner who had built a website for his business on WordPress. He was wondering why the internet hadn’t been knocking down the door to the site to get in. As I was listening to him talk about the time and energy he’d invested, he made a statement that really hit the mark. He said;

“Hell, I could have been selling “my product” instead of wasting weeks on this!”

My new client had spent weeks building one of his most important businesses assets, the website. He assumed that a website was a “set-it-and-forget-it” endeavor. That’s far from the truth. There are many things to consider when deciding if you should or should not build your own business website.

Below are some of the most important reasons to build your business, not your business website

  1. Time – It takes a lot of time and effort to set up (design, build, host and maintain) a business web platform. In fact, internet search has become an entire industry. There are, of course, tools and platforms available to help you navigate through the SEO world but there are no short-cuts. Developing pages and writing content that can be located in Google, Bing and other search platforms are time-consuming at best and frustrating at worse.
